Research Students Published
Journal of Emerging InvestigatorsSonia Balani and Lina Kim, students in the Research in Molecular Genetics class were notified that their research has been accepted for publication in the peer reviewed Journal of Emerging Scientists. The title of their research was “Effects of Various Environmental Factors on Stomatal Density, Area, and Potential Conductance Index.” Their research won first place in the category of Botany at the Northern New Jersey Regional Science Fair. In addition, Sonia and Lina were Intel International Science and Engineering Fair Finalists.  The process of getting their research published in a peer review journal was a long and arduous process, but a tremendous learning experience that few high school students get to experience.

It all started with submission of their manuscript and a two-week pre-review process to determine if the formatting and presentation were accurate. This was followed by a 6-8 scientific review by three scientists to ascertain if the results were believable and important to science as well as provide suggestions to improve their manuscript. After the scientific review, the manuscript went to the editors. The editors used the comments from the scientific review to create a list of changes that needed to be made before publication. After the students made their changes, the manuscript went to the copy editor who made suggestions to improve clarity and then sent the manuscript back to authors to make the changes. Lastly, after all changes were completed and approved, the manuscript was formatted into a professional layout and sent back to authors for final approval and publication.
